Copper Medical Unit "55" ancient style challenge coin
These dies were prepared for a US Army Medical Unit. The Unit leaders hand struck the coins themselves as a moral event.
The pieces were issued in to all of the unit members. These were copper pieces used by the soldiers to practice hand hammering so they were never full struck. This is one of the better ones I set aside. The planchets were struck hot and that is what the discoloration is.
We kept a few as archive pieces. The Medical Unit is still in possession of the striking dies.
